Bluffton Middle School Behavior Rubric

About Their Behavior Rubric

Bluffton Middle School is in South Carolina’s Beaufort County School District. They designed their PBIS matrix around the following values:

  • Balance
  • Leadership
  • Motivation
  • Service

Bluffton’s PBIS team selected these values because they are indicative of the school’s culture, which they wanted to be the foundation of their PBIS work.

Location-Based Behavior Rubric

To build the rubric categories, Bluffton opted to focus on locations in the school:

  • Hallway
  • Classroom
  • Restroom
  • Cafeteria
  • Assembly
  • Library
  • Bus
  • Flex/Fields

Then, Balance, Leadership, Motivation, and Service are the rubric items under each. Having a rubric with more generic rubric items simplifies the process of recording points for teachers. Teachers can easily select the value that best fits a behavior, rather than scrolling through a long list of the multitude of positive and negative behaviors students can take in a certain location.
