School culture is the top priority for K12 leaders. But how do you change it? McDougle Middle School has ideas.

School culture is the top priority for leaders in K12 education. But how do you change school culture? Well, McDougle Middle School has some ideas.

When McDougle Middle School returned to in-person learning, they faced major challenges – like many schools.

McDougle's Assistant Principal, Jaimi West, realized that to fix these problems, her team had to re-invest in their school culture.

To do this, they implemented House Points, which incentivizes good behaviors, fosters teamwork, and creates a sense of community and shared goals for students, staff, and teachers.

But McDougle Middle School didn't stop there. Their House Points system also celebrates student culture and backgrounds, makes teachers the heroes, and (bonus) doesn't cost the school any money for rewards.

Students, staff, admins, teachers, AND parents love it.

How they achieved this in just a few short months, that's what Jaimi shared in this video.

About the Presenter

Jaimi graduated from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a Master of School Administration degree in 2019, and currently, is working on her doctoral degree in Education Leadership. Prior to being an Assistant Principal, she taught 5th grade at Glenwood Elementary for 10 years. She began her career teaching for 5 years at Bugg Creative Arts and Science Magnet School in Wake County.

Jaimi's teaching background helped her build a strong foundation in instructional practices and a love for helping children develop an excitement for learning. She firmly believes that strong relationships with students, families, and teachers are the foundation for the success of every student.

Outside of school, she finds great joy in spending time with my husband and children. They love to cheer on the Tar Heels at the Dean Dome, visit museums in the area, and explore parks and nature trails.
